Hi Ken,
I had the same thing happen on a 99 GMC 2500. They dropped the tank and replaced the pump with an OEM pump. One year and a bit later I was about 100 miles from home pulling my trailer on my way to pick up a Power Wagon and it quit. I had been having trouble with the gas gauge but didnt think I was that low. I called AAA and they brought me out some gas. That didnt help so he pounded on the tank as you described. It caughed once but wouldnt start. He towed me back to his shop. I arranged for a ride home while they worked on the truck. It was the fuel pump again. They also replaced the fuel filter that is on the frame rail. They said it didnt look like it had ever been replaced but I had replaced it 2 years earlier. I suspect the "mechanic" that I had do the first pump did not replace the filter, leading to a shortened life for the new pump. I have stopped taking stuff to this guy because his repairs seem to all last abouut a year. He did 3 seperate jobs on my wifes Caravan about a year and a half ago and like clockwork one by one they all failed, just after a year clicked by. Unfortunatly, he lives a mile away, and is on the local Volunteer Fire Dept, so I like try to stay on his good side. I just wont bring him any more work.
So, to make a long story short, make sure to replave that fuel filter when the pump is replaced. Its on the drivers side frame rail, forward of the tank a foot or two.
Tim
