...by hand you can tell a little bit about the condition...if the bearings are so bad that you can feel or hear a protest going on in there when you spin the shafts. There are washers/shims/retainers/etc. depending upon which model transfer case you are talking about, that lessen the side play, end play and play offs.... it's really hard to tell by ear unless there is a great amount of internal damage. You could have a tighter case but a chipped tooth on a gear cluster...it's really hard to say without xray vision or opening up the case....now if that play is 2 inches, you have a slight clue, how much play or slop is there?
