Theory is that the little ol lady from Pasadena never revved them. This causes a ridge in one place- revving an engine will ocassionally speed up the pistons, throwing them higher, and wearing the ridge to a lesser 'step'. Stopping the piston at the same place makes a ridge with a more severe step. Then, granny leaves the car to her grandson, who drives it like a hot rod. First time he revs it, the pistons are thrown upward, using all their momentum to drag the rod upwards, using all the slop that granny wore into the rod bearings. The rings hit the step, and break something- ring, or the ring land of the piston. This according to Mr Devore, my auto shop teacher in 1969.
