K&Ns are too easily misused and that's atleast where some of the problems come from. When cleaning, the cotton can be damaged if your too vigourous with water/solvent pressure or a scrub brush. The info says never to use compressed air due to this. Then there's the oiling part wherein some users don't use enough or don't achieve complete coverage with the oil. And over oiling them has issues too...
They're not a "plug and play" application like a paper filter. I've seen a few K&Ns that weren't oiled at all!
Notice I didn't say K&Ns are diffcult to use correctly, just that they are easily used incorrectly. I know more than one person who just about refuses to read instructions/guidelines for anything.
