K&N or oil saturated type filters should be serviced at normal intervals just like any other component. Just because the element itself is warranteed for a million miles doesn't mean that you can run it for a million miles unserviced.
I've used the K&N type for over 30 years on multiple types of off road vehicles, under the most extreme of conditions, with no problems. They are specifically engineered for dust and dirt and work well when properly installed and maintained. In my 50 years of off-road running and racing I have seen all sorts of air filtration issues, non of which were attributed to the K&N filter itself, but to sloppy installation, broken hoses, bad filter body gaskets, or from shadetree improvising that didn't quite fit the carb or filter housing.
Laboratory tests prove that the K&N type is the most effective at filtering while allowing maximum clean air into the motor.

PS: I don't live in LA, but I'd imagine that the air there is not as clean as AZ.....
