Start at TDC, then advance it as far as it will go without causing pinging. It's a trial-and-error thing, not hard fast rules.
Typically, small blocks like around 8-12° BTDC. Don't forget to change your idel speed as needed. You may have to remix your idel circuit on your carb, as well.
