I'm trying to do a similar project - convert a 24 volt M37 to 12 volts. I assume that WE MAY BE USING A LOT OF THE SAME PARTS if you have the 230 engine. Will let you know what I find out, and would appreciate any input you may have for me.
Main holdup for me is what distributor to use. I haven't been able to determine if there is a 12 volt one or if the 6 volt one could just be modified with new condenser, etc. You could probably have a shop rework your generator to 12 volts. The starter can actually be left original (6 volts) and cranked with 12 volts. It will spin twice as fast, but won't damage it as long as you don't overheat it. Let me know how you are progressing.
