I should mention that the 6x4 2 1/2 tonners were not "stateside only" trucks.

The Army used the GMC CCW 6x4 for the Red Ball Express in France, where most use was on roads. Supposedly they were also used on the Burma Road in limited numbers.

Most of the Studebaker Model US 6x4 went to Russia. The US Army did use some, though, again on the Red Ball Express. (Look how similar a Russian GAZ cargo truck is to a Studebaker).

As far as I can tell, the US Marines were the only users of the International M-5 6x4. (Though it wouldn't surprise me if the Navy got their hands on some.)

It should be noted that many other 6x4 and even 4x2 trucks were used on the Red Ball Express and on the Burma Road. All wheel drive was not considered a requirement when the mission called mainly for supply running via back areas and on roads. Even some heavy duty wreckers and tank transporters were 6x4's, and they definitely were used off road.
