An 18 foot, 7,000 pound GVW car hauler with electric brakes on one axle runs about $1200 here in Texas including loading ramps. Here, every other truck on the road is pulling a trailer and this large market keeps the prices reasonable. A 3/4 ton pickup with a frame mounted receiver hitch handles this load. It is dangerous to use a ball on the bumper. Even with the 1-ton pick up, I use an equalizer hitch. It's important to have 10% of the total trailer weight including load on the hitch. This pushes the back of the truck down and lifts the front wheels. In turn, this can result in loss of control on slippery roads or when going over "whoop-dee-do's" in the road. I-20 through Jackson, MS has a stretch that makes it feel like the front tires actually leave the pavement. No equalizer - then go slower and be very careful. I make many long trips, often 2500 miles each way, and having a good trailer is essential for safety - mine, other drivers, and my Power Wagon. A gooseneck trailer puts the load in the bed and is the next step up.

When you get your trailer, load up and come to the Texas Power Wagon Reunion.
