Look on the rear of the switch by the wire terminals. See if there is a push button. Push the button and the knob and shaft will pull out. You may have to push in on the knob and wiggle it some to achieve release.

Some of the headlight switches had this release feature, but I forget the years. Hopefully yours is like this.

You are looking for a little metal button with a spring under it, coming out of the switch.
