Now that you have all the techincal data on what to do and not to do, there are those of us that either welded on our frames out of ignorence or decided it was exceptable risk for the situation at hand.
So here my 2 cents. I welded 1/2" plates on each outside rail of my frame ( 52 FFPW ) that O used as mounting points for a snow plow I built years ago, these were in use for about 6 years before I re-designed the whole set up, the location was just behind the front shock mount, I covered the frame number stamping area. No cracks, No bends, yes, this may have been the wrong thing to do, however, no ill effects occured.
( I used 1/8" 7018 up-hill procedure :)
