Usually what makes the shaft break isn't the design. I gets stressed when the front cab mounts deteriorate letting the cab sink down putting stress on the steering column where it bolts to the dash. When that happens it is bending the shaft at all times and eventually its gotta give. The holes in the frame where the steering box botls up are slotted for adjusting. If you replace with another stock set up, keep those bolts loose as you clamp column to dash, then tighen frame bolts all the way. I have never broken a shaft on one of mine but a few on here have and it always turns out to be that adjustment is way off.
As far as coil go you would have to redesign the steering system as well. I would use 94 and up Dodge coil set up if I were to ever take on that mod.
I think personally I would go to reverse front shackle on the leaf springs before I would go coil. An easier mod and almoost as good of a ride. M37s have reverse shackle in the front and the ride quality difference is amazing. Steve
