Ken, my better half, Jan did the same thing a few years back to our Jetta TDI. Fortunately, she caught the mistake at the pump just before leaving and called me before ever starting it up. I towed it a few blocks to a local shop (not a dealer)and after spending a good amount of chargable time trying unsuccessfully to bleed it through the fuel pump, they ended up accessing the tank through a removable plate in the trunk and siphoning/mopping it out. They replaced the filters, blew out the lines where they could, filled the tank with diesel, sealed everything back up and its been working fine since then. I can't help but think that at least a little bit of gas sneaked through somewhere in the process, but it has caused no problems. It ended up being nearly a $300.00 mistake, plus the cost of the full tank of high-test that she pumped into it.
I can't comment on the fact that your's ran for a few seconds and how that might make it a worse scenario.
She felt terrible and took me back to show me the pump at the grocery store station that we don't ususally use. The arrangement of the selection buttons on the pump relative to the signs displaying the choices was such that the mistake could have been easy to make. She's an RN, a pilot, a better driver than me, and not used to making that type of mistakes. It can happen to anyone!
Hope your other wreck left everyone O.K.
Good Luck, Bruce
