You actually hit the nail on the head. Motor oil is usually the BEST rust preventative AND lubricant. It's the best stuff to use on hinges and latches too. I learned this from an old timer, and back in the day, I used my old oil after a change to wipe down the underneath of my vehicles.
When I got rid of my Buick, with 110K on it, there was no real rust anywhere underneath. That's with it sitting outside, on the street in Chicago (all of it's life with me). 3 of those years, it was just sitting on a main street which was heavily salted during the winter, never being washed and only occasionally being moved as I was off protecting God Mother America from those Godless communist aggressors. ;>)
