Clear "Patina" protection

If it's been mentioned in a previous forum, I don't recall it. One of the guys in our old truck club was facinated with the appearance of western weathered original paint on some older trucks. When he brought them back to the humid southeast, the rust and corrosion got serious in a hurry. So he decided to lightly buff with Scotch pads and seal the original with modern clear coat. They look great and everybody thinks it is novel. The metal is protected and you still have that wonderful historical look. Anybody else been doing this?
