In the sixties, I was living in a little village just out of Schweinfurt while serving in the US Army. My landlord described the terror of the big raid of B-17s in '43. The flack brought down one of the big birds in a field out behind my apartment. He said the next day, while digging through the still smoldering wreckage, they examined the bearings on one of the big Rolls/Royce engines. Clearly stamped: "Schweinfurt, Germany". The chief targets of the raid had been the manufacturing plants that produced those bearings!
