There was good lubricants 50 years ago. For example, Buick and maybe some others used whale oil in the rear diffs. It is excellent stuff. Much thinner than gear oil and you dont replace it. you remove it, strain it and put it back in. I have a 1920 punch clock that has all it gears and other moivng parts lubed with a grease from a whale. that clock still keeps perfect time and there is no wear on any of the parts. Unfortunately there isn't enough whales to keep using it. Japanese cars used whale grease in their CV joints well into the 70s
