The manual for my old pony-motor D4 cat says to use the cheapest oil available or clean used oil in the oil bath air cleaner. Oil type is not critical since it does not have to lubricate. All it has to do is flow at the ambient temperature and be sticky enough to trap dust. I usually go with used oil if I have some handy that's not sludgy, or I use some Wal*Mart or other store brand of 5W20, whatever's sitting around. The manual also says to check the oil level regularly and if it's TOO HIGH OR TOO THICK, dump it out and clean it because it's gotten too much water or dust in it. It warns against using steam to clean the element because steam will create little mud balls that are difficult to remove. Rinse in kerosene or other solvent. Oil bath air cleaners work better than paper, are cheaper in the long run than paper, and have less pressure drop than paper. The only downside of them is they require a little more attention.
