Actually, if you lose your service brakes, applying the driveline brake on an unimproved road surface could result in having only one wheel on each axle doing the braking - as in the "one wheel on ice" situation I described.

Applying cable actuated brakes at both rear wheels should result in having one axle stopping or slowing the vehicle. As long as you are in four wheel drive in a system with no differential between front and rear drive shafts, you will actually have three wheels working to slow or stop you since the effort to slow the rear axle will be transmitted by the rear drive shaft through the transfer to the front drive shaft - and in turn to at least one of the front wheels.

In either case, the parking brake must be properly adjusted.
