You run into some wierd things and it doese not matter if your DOT or what ever approved.

I know Washington State ferries would not allow any gas cans on board if they were external. Even if you had the white ones with water in them. They seem not to know the difference. They just did not want any gas or fuel on board unless it was in a vehical gas tank. They also make you turn off any propane tanks in your RV. They check them and put a sticky lable on the door with the tanks every time you board one of their boats.

They even run explosive finding dogs through the car waiting lot. The dog triggered on the side of the camper one day. THe guy asked what guns or ammo I had. I sad none and that it was the propane tanks location. He said no the dog smelled guns. Then I realized that behind the tanks was the place when I had a gun cleaning kit stored. THe guy said that makes sense.

I was kicked off a lake in Glacier Park one time because my lif vest did not have a US Coast Gard approved lable on it.
