Nick:

The M42 looked like the M43 ambulance. It stood out too. Back during WW II, the army started using the WC 51's & 52's for commo/recon duty, with the exception of the Zeta unit. They used converted WC 54's, WC 63's and a captured BMW.

The Carryall's & Command Cars MAIN duty (what they were designed for) was communication and recon (can't spell it in full), not haulin fat butted officers around. They sorta just did that cause they were fat butted higher ranking officers and wanted out of the weather.

They were usually assigned to engineer, communication or light armor units. I used to have some old pre WW II TO&E charts from the army that showed that. Of course ya musta heard the story of the 2 WC 53's that were stretched into limos (4 doors) during the war? The Holy Grail of Carryalls. One was supposedly crushed in Iowa and the other just vanished.
