Hacksaws are the worst, but pipe cutters leave a razor sharp end, then, as you work the hose over the end, you peel off scrapings.

Pushing the tubing over the neatly flared end of the steel works. Just push the nut up the line. But the flare will over-stretch the rubber, and it won't last long before developing axial cracks.

Try removing a piece of hose from one of these jack-leg improvements, and slit it open lengthwise, so you can examine the inner surface.

Don't be shy about doing other post-mortem exams either. I bring a paper plate with me whenever I go to change a fuel filter or carb. Dump the old gas on the white plate to see what you settled. Many tanks are loaded with paint flakes, like red lead primer, from the pipelines and tanker trucks. They have probs with filter too.
