To try and answer the original question. The by-pass hose does just that. It allows an amount of coolant to return to the radiator while the thermostat is closed . Routing the hose through the heater port will not accomplish the same task and the thermostat may not work properly as a result. Bear in mind this is from memory, I don't have a poly in front of me to verify.
