I am re-opening this thread as I started to reply on the last forum, but as luck would have it, I typed out the entire message and when I hit return, the message was gone and we were on this new forum!!

I asked this question:

How fast, or should I say "SLOW" does your 3/4 ton WC model go?

Using a police stationary radar machine, I had the 1942 command car (3/4 ton) SCREAMING, or what I thought was fast enough for these motors, and the highest speed I hit was 38MPH!!

Ha.. Pathetic.

I got all of your reponses (Thank you) and to tell the truth, I am both impressed (with your road speeds) and disgusted (my trucks performance!)

Now, what I was going to respond with was questions and possible reasons that some of you posted in response. I got new tires, 9;00-16 NDT's on the combat wheels.

NO shaking, no front end issues, nothing.

Everything feels and sounds good and tight.

Just that after what seems like acheiving not a very high speed, the motor really is SCREAMING at me.

Its funny I am hearing about guys doing 55-60 in the same truck, COMFORTABLY!!

I have a hard time imagining it to tell the truth. If I feel that this engine wants to grenade after 38 MPH, how the H^&* fast are you all turning these motors at!!

To further investigate, I visited Bob Stahls veteran Vehicles web site.

He states that the 9:00-16 tire with 5:83 gears should yeild a safe max road speed of 43 MPH with the engine turning at 2500 RPM.

add the 4:89 gears and one should be able to acheive 52 MPH @ 2500 RPM.

So, how are you 5:83 geared trucks getting 60 MPH? Dont seem right with all else being equal.

I have a 230 c.i flathead too. I cant imagine this particualr flathead has no way of acheiving higher rpms any more than all of yours do.

So, how is it possible that some of you guys are achielving 60 MPH with 5:83 gears and 9:00-16 tires with out that motor ready to grenade on you?

are you positive your REALLY going this fast?

thanks all..
