B3-PW non-standard front axle

Upon tearing the front axle assmbly down to replace the oil seals I found that the right side fronnt axle assembly is not original. The inner and outer right side shafts have what I would describe as a male end where they mate together with four huge ball bearings in between them. Before disassmbly everything seemed to function fine. I have a spare front axle assmbly that I assume is standard. Should I reinstall what was there or should I swap out for the original?
