I'd get the new steering wheel and then make a little cover out of wood to keep the sunshine off of it.. be careful in the design and you don't want to make a nice home for wasps/bee's.
Although it has lasted 65 years, you could just let it be... I don't know that the replacement will have the quality of the old one though...
