Is there a Trick to doing this ?

Need to remove and replace a headlight switch on a FFPW (47WDX). Having trouble removing the knob from the switch shaft. Afraid of damaging the switch if I pull any harder on the knob than I have been. I see a slot on the bottom of the knob but it doesn't seem to be part of a release mechanism. Please tell me there is a trick to this. I'd hate to admit how much time I've spent on this task.
