I use to build home improvement stores. We went in when it was just four walls and a floor and roof and changed it into the store. Everyone would build a display and then chuck the leftover parts, screws, lumber,or whatever and chuck them in the trash. When the started the next display they would get another box of screws and new lumber but no one ever used the scraps. I kept up with everyone doing that and everytime a box was chucked I would retrieve it and use it for my builds. at the end of my first store I had 25 pounds of screws in various sizes most still in the boxes they came in. I showed the boss and he was shocked the next store the whole crew was given 25 screw at a time of what ever size they needed and we saved all the scrap lumber and saved so much that we came in nearly $45,000 under budget on materials.
To the best of my knowledge they are still doing it the same way that I started and that company is still putting together more stores than any other since they always come in under budget.
