In my experience, the worst steel available is usually re-bar. If you have some old rebar laying around, it would probably work as a field expedient. 3/8 rebar should fit right in the hole. Then pick up the right pins the next time you go to town. Another expedient might be a piece of a 10" or 12" spike or pole barn nail if you have one.
