Because they are hardened teeth, they would chip to easy using a square cut. Some rounding is needed to increase the contact surface to prevent chipping. The rounding you do have is from manufacturing the gear and grinding gears over time when shifting. Unless you have broken teeth, you're good to go. Tooth contact is greater than 75% 1st - 3rd.
