I will post some Burl pictures in the next couple of days.
Burls grow usually at the base of a tree. They usually 75% to 80% out of the ground. Usually what you see is what you get unless growing up against a hillside.
The Burl Venner business goes way back into the early 1900's. The Burl veneer is used for Furniture, Automotive industry, Architectural industry. Pretty spendy stuff. #1 Lace Burl Veneer sells for $12.00 to 45.00 a square meter at 1/64". In America the venners are sliced from 1/32" to 1/40", in Europe they slice around 1/64". My dad and I have shipped Burls from the west coast dating back to 1948. The Burls sell by the pound, usualy from $1.00 to $5.00 per pound depending on grade. We used to cut around 1200 to 2500 ton per year. The type of trees we cut were Pepperwood (Myrtle, Leaves in your spaghetti sauce), Madrona, Maple and Redwood. We liked to try and find Burls that weighed from 1000lbs to 6000lbs, these weights were pretty easy to handle, although we did cut many Burls that were from 10,000lbs to 30,000lbs. I have some really cool pictures I will post.
