Are you refering to the drive thrust ball lock pin (across shaft) or the drive thrust ball pin (center of shaft)?

You can drive out the thrust ball lock pin and then bounce the splined end of the axle assembly on a 2x4 to dislodge the thrust ball pin. There are different size balls to adjust the preload when rebuilding.

To check for wear, clamp the long shaft in a vise, push down on the short shaft keeping it vertical, twisting side-to-side to check for play. If there is play, a rebuild is preferred

A NOS unit runs about $150.00 each side if you prefer to do that. Kits are probably available from .001 to .003 ball undersize, but you may need the D-10252 Parts List for the 1/2 ton to help find the correct parts
