Hydraulic winch vs. PTO shaft drive

A couple of questions: I assume the MU-2 winch is fairly simple inside, bearings and seals on the input shaft and both sides of the drum, and an engaging system. When these winches are offered used e.g., "turns OK but no guarantees", are the problems typically rebuildable (like a broken shear pin, bearings etc.) or is there a possiblity of damaged gears. There seem to be a lot of winches around in questionable condition.

Also, What are the advantages of a hydraulic operated winch? Don't you need a separate pump for this application? And if so, what else in a truck might be run off the same hydraulic pump ....

I guess that's more than two questions!
