The $82.49 Question

Is the PIF listing correct for the Power Wagon battery group size? I just purchased a NAPA 6-volt Group 2 battery and it doesn't fit properly in the battery tray of my WDX. Have another tray from a parts truck and they are the same. The problem is an "L" shaped bracket in the tray base that prevents the battery from sitting flush in the tray. This bracket appears to be there to accommodate the dimensions of a Group 1 battery's shorter length, but the tray and the cover (battery hold down bracket) exactly fit the length and width of the Group 2 battery. Compare the Group 8 illustrations in the parts list of Feb '53 and April '56. The illustration of Feb '53 shows the battery mounted at that bracket and apparently a smaller in length cover (than the tray) as well. The illustration of April '56 shows the battery filling the tray and a matching length cover. I am assuming the battery is a 6-volt because of external cell connectors. The list for '56 shows a new part number for a cover but the tray's the same. So did the larger capacity batteries of the day have a notch at the base to accommodate this protrusion as it would appear based on the April '56 illustration? Removing that bracket would seem to be a simple solution but it is impossible to tell exactly where it was (spot?) welded on. Any other method of removal would be difficult, plus I would hate to destroy a perfectly good part.

In my search for information on the net I ran across this gem. If you've got time....enjoy!
