The first thing to check is the shear pin, as many
uneducated folks might have replaced them with a
high grade bolt, which would not shear easily thus
overworking the worm and worm gear. The MU-2 was available on the W300, however it differs from the WM300 style as to the location of the engagement lever, it is called an MU-2A, I have one factory installed on my 1964 W300 Crew Cab.
I suppose you could easliy fabricate the W300 frame extensions to adapt to the MU-2 from a WM300, and I consider this to be superior to the LU-2 and its often cracked aluminum housing, and chicken poop style engagement lever. If you are able to pull the cover on the worm and worm gear side, it will tell you plenty about the condition of the winch and whether it was overworked or not.

Best of luck
