Emissions control

A prior owner modified the emissions system on my 79 W150--318, 2bbl Carter BBD. Some of the vacuum hoses are rerouted, some are capped, the EGR valve is disconnected, the "snout" is missing from the air cleaner assembly, and the ECS canister is disconnected. If the EGR valve is connected the engine dies. The electric choke heater does not heat up. In its present condition the truck generally runs good, except for an occasional backfire. Other than the vacuum advance, how much of this mess do I really need? Should I try to put the system back in factory condition, get rid of everything not necessary, or leave well enough alone? The truck is my daily driver and does not have to pass any inspections. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
