12V or 6V

I just started my FFPW restore, and really cant figure out if it is a 6 volt or 12 volt electrical system since it does not have a battery in it. It is a 1951, so its supposed to be a 6V I believe. There is a lot of screwy wiring, so a conversion might have been installed sometime over the years. What electrical devices might I look at to get a defenitive answer? Would the starter or voltage regulator have special markings? Also, what does "positive ground" mean? I know the basics, but is there a special battery involved or do i just get a 6 or 12 volt battery and ground the positive? Thanks once again, Michael Fanoni
