I think you're right Nick... although I don't think his status changes much in being a dead martyr or a live hero to those of his tribe/sect. He'll still be revered and emulated... but at least dead he won't be planning anything or leading anything.
Someone else will take up the banner though. Like you say, the culture is the issue, and our cultures seem to be incompatible. The conflict will continue as long as the culture of hate and feud continues, and that culture has a long tradition in the region... may more years than our nation has been around.
Taking out the entire "nest" is possible... but not a civilized solution. Changing the culture is not possible with our current level of commitment. I suspect we will leave the job un-done, lacking the political will to stay and spend the time, treasure, and lives required to create a new culture in the region.
I fear this will come back to bite us, with an event that makes the casualties of 9-11 look small in comparison. Then, perhaps, the nation/world will wake up and do what needs to be done (help the moderates in the region establish a new culture, not "take out" the entire nest).
Sorry for the doom and gloom on what should otherwise be considered a bit of good news.
