i saw the same thing happen in the oregon coast range back in the seventies...huge isolated swaths of timber were knocked down in an area where tornadoes were unheard of,but high winds were common. the swaths were very isolated,it was like walking up to a wall in the woods. it sounds like you were very lucky to escape with no damage!
