I used one of these a few years back. As with anything else there is a learning curve and practice is necessary to ensure good results. I was able to do what you would expect it to do. That is, mimic spot welds. The difficulty is that to do this it is heating up the outer layer, via arc, more than the layer underneath, unlike a conventional spot weld which clamps the two layers of metal between two electrodes and uses no arc.

I found I would get a good weld or two then get one where the outer layer started to puddle to the side vs down onto the layer beneath.

Anyway, it produced OK results, not great and not bad. But I didn't spend much time trying to master it either. I'm sure better results could be achieved with it.
