Towing Question

I want to know if there is a safe way to tow my Town Wagon behind my P/U across country? I don't want to rent a car carrier since the only ones I can find through Ryder and Penske require you rent the Moving Trucks also for about 2500. What about welding a trailer tongue to the front bumper at the frame mounts (my bumper is not stock but very heavy duty) and pulling it behind my 1500 Dodge P/U?
