If you use a 12 volt electric compressor, where does the power come from? It comes from the engine via the alternator/generator. The only efficiency difference vs a belt-driven one is that now you have the inefficiency of the generator and of the pump motor, which together will be about 50%. This assumes, of course, that you have some kind of clutch to disengage the belt-driven compressor when you don't need it. If you're comparing a full-time belt-driven one to an electric one that you can turn on and off, then yes, the electric will be better because it won't rob power from the engine when you need the engine to work hard.
