I grew up using one of those spark plug compressors! Napa use to carry them and I'd like to get one or two but haven't gone in to see if they still have them.

Dad had a f-100 ford with a 6 cylinder and we'd put it on the #2 cylinder. Pull the plug, screw it in attach the hose and fill up tires. We once patched a tube with 17 holes around 11pm at night under a street light... hehe...

I don't know that the gas fumes would build up for a normal tire. and you don't increase the idle to get more air. just let the engine idle and every so many seconds a burst of air would come out...
