Don't give up, Paul. Check with a reliable paint store. Not a department store or Home Depot or Wal Mart. There are products out there that can be used to neutralize and prepare the concrete for paint sooner than you might think. My painting contractor has painted garage slabs for me in less than 6 months. One consideration is the base under the slab. Is it sandy or did you put down a vapor barrier before the concrete? Moisture will continue to pass through unsealed concrete for a long time.
You could always seal it with maple syrup. Ha Ha
