Especially compared old combat tires (very stiff sidewalls that were hard to shoot out and could run quite a ways without air), modern radials are pretty thin-skinned and "weak". It sounds to me more like a case of "CYA" on the part of the tire guy, who may not even know exactly what the combat rims are like, than a definitive statement based on experience. But I could be wrong. Everybody can have an opinion, but the only thing that counts is trying it.
