It could be somethin totally unrelated to the fuel, like coil, condenser, points. Or it could be some crud from the bottom of the tank pluggin the filter, or jet, or under fuel pump valve... Or trying to pump with no gas was the last gasp of the pump diaphragm.

A "Mexicaneering" trick is to cross a couple plug wires and play with the choke til it backfires through carb, with choke closed. It might blow the crap out of the jet. Or maybe blow the crap out of the whole truck. Be sure to get the plug wires back on what's left of the truck properly. If it fixes the prob, the chunk of crud may just setttle in the bowl and cause no problem, or may get sucked up again some day, probably off road when you've got a whole lot of shakin' goin on.

Or maybe when dry, the float dropped all the way, and some crud got under the inlet needle, and now it is running rich/flooding. If so,another "Mexicaneering" trick is to pinch off the fuel line while truck is running, to run float bowl empty. After it dies, release pinch, and crank til starts. The float will have dropped when dry, and in-rushing fuel will wash crud out of needle/seat. The most common type of crud that does this is some chewed up rubber hose, from where some other "Mexicaneer" rough cut a steel line with dikes or a hacksaw, to put in a fuel filter to fix the problem he just created by cutting the steel line with a hacksaw.
