You must not drive a WDX-WM300 type power wagon, 'cause there is'nt a whole lot of power to brag about under the hood. 89HP and 9-10 MPG? I've had as good as 14 MPG, but thats with 30 wt oil, Holley 2 bbl carb, Pertronix ignition, and K&N air filter. I would debate the ruggedness and dependability of the 230 ci engine also. I guess for the engineering of the time it was what they had to work with, that was still affordable for the working man. They had a nice powerplant with the poly 318 or the low deck hemi motors of the 50's and early 60's. Now were talking upwards of 200 HP with the same or better economy.
You want to drive a power wagon and get good fuel economy, install a perkins/cummins/isuzu/deutz/detroit diesel(well, ok, maby not a detroit) and a set of 4.89 gears. now you got nice torque, 115 HP, and over 22 MPG, plus that wonderfull diesel clatter!
I really do believe that in the near future the US is going to get smart and ramp up production of domestic bio-diesel from soybeans. Lots of farms that are strugling will have the chance to make a decent living again. Gasoline will be a thing of the past for our children. And I cant wait, because we can tell those middle easterns that hate us but love our $ to go take a walk in the desert!
