If my memory serves me correctly, Hydraulic operated brakes were designed around 1918 by Lockheed and used first by Chrysler and another automaker, these were simple single post shoes with a single wheel cylinder that was an important advantage over the 'mechanical brakes' used up til then. the 'center plane' or more commonly known 'servo-hydraulic brake' was fitted to automobiles in the very early 1950s. They were an improved type over the widely used 'single post brake' (like the PWs use. The 'servo' types operated on a floating heel principle where a one piston wheel cyl would actuate the forward shoe into the drum then the rotation of the drum would apply pressure through the heel to the back shoe. They were replaced in the late 50's by the 'dual-servo'brake' that utilized a dual piston wheel cyl or two single piston types and the floating heel principle. Then Chrysler attempted disc brakes in the mid 50's with limited results due to high footpedal pressure, and they were forgotten til the early 60s when Studebaker introduced improved power assisted disc brakes! Correct me if I am wrong..it has been over 30 years since I went through Lockheed brake school so my recollections will be close but amy not be exact!
