The only nut I know of that a seal rides on is in the wheel hub. It is there to keep 90wt out of the wheel bearing grease. If that is your leak, I'd say you need sealent at all surfaces of the hub assy- on the inside of the nut, both sides of the seal 'flange, soak gaskets (if used) with spray stuff (enamel paint?)so they are not porous.

If your leakage is from the pinion nut, then sealer on the threads/yoke ought to fix that.

I'd use a speedy sleeve and a neoprene seal for a leaky pinion seal fix. Leather is severly abrasive on seal surfaces. My opinion, YMMV.
