Eric, I am 99.9% sure that all first series beds used the cast brackets. I have never seen an "original" bracket in anything other than cast on a first series bed. I have seen both cast iron and cast brass brackets and all angled towards the ground. Mac has one that sticks out straight. I believe his truck is early enough that it rolled off the line before they had a chance to develop one specifically for the new WDX's. As you know, the parts books do not mention a seperate part number for early WDX cast brackets as opposed to later cast ones.

My '51 B3PW is early enough in the model run that it would have had the first series box had it not been ordered as a cab/chassis. Even so, it came with the first series rear fenders, first series spare tire carrier, and the first series cast tailight bracket on the driver's side.

Only an educated guess here, but I believe the next stamped bracket first came on the new second series beds in early 1951 and continued on through 1968.
